Bio

Dr. Armstrong is a graduate of McGill University where he received an MD and a PhD in the neurosciences. He completed full post-graduate training in clinical neurology at McGill’s Montreal Neurological Institute and at the University of Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children.

For the past 25 years, Dr. Armstrong has devoted his professional life to the interdisciplinary assessment and management of complex chronic pain, having worked in multidisciplinary clinic, private office, hospital (VGH and GF Strong) and medical-legal settings.

His principal focus, currently, is on the medical-legal aspects of complex chronic pain. He prepares expert, independent and comprehensive medical evaluations, reports and opinions pertaining to individuals who have sustained personal injury and are experiencing chronic pain with long term impairment. His clients are law firms and insurance companies.

Dr. Armstrong’s expertise includes soft tissue and musculoskeletal pain disorders; headache disorders; chronic neuropathic pain disorders including complex regional pain syndrome, trigeminal neuralgia, erythromelalgia, atypical facial pain, and neuropathic pain that follows brain, spinal cord or peripheral nerve injuries or entrapments; nociplastic pain (central and/or peripheral sensitization or central disinhibition) such as occurs in fibromyalgia syndrome; visceral pain disorders; chronic fatigue syndrome; chronic pain and addiction; and the psychiatric disturbances experienced by individuals with complex chronic pain, especially Somatic Symptom Disorder as distinguished clinically from nociplastic pain.

He has prepared more than 1200 independent comprehensive medical-legal evaluations, reports and opinions for plaintiff and defense counsel and for insurance firms concerning personal injury and disability claims. Dr. Armstrong has appeared numerous times in the Supreme Court of British Columbia where he has been consistently accepted as an expert in the field of complex chronic pain, its evaluation, diagnosis, complications, associated conditions, impairments, and management.

Dr. Armstrong attends major continuing Canadian and international medical conferences pertaining to complex chronic pain. He is a member of the American Pain Society, the Canadian Pain Society, the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), the Pain Research Forum, the American Academy of Pain Medicine, the American Academy of Neurology, the Society for Neuroscience, the Canadian Society of Medical Evaluators, the Pain Medicine Physicians of BC Society, and the Medical Legal Society of British Columbia
